creeking course 2017

quinnThis page is to help us organize in one location the details of the upcoming paddling trip (Spring 2017)  With Calgary Aquabatics.

Dave recently contacted Simon about the course with a bunch of questions and from our questions he had questions on how we want to do this. he can tailor the course to suit our needsbut we would need to discuss the logistics of what we would do to make the course/trip cheaper for us. Things we could do is arrange our own Logistics. There are pros and cons to each and we would need to discuss as a group. Cost of the course is approximately 1200 and would get cheaper depending on what we would do for ourselves.

The basic course outline would look like this (Click on the links for videos of the rivers):

Day 1:  skill development on the Kananaskis.  This is crucial as it sets the bench mark for the whole program as far as what we are working on skill wise.  We usually start the week with a short flatwater session to dial in some key concepts (a  bit of backwards to go forwards), then apply that on Class III for the remainder of that day.
Day 2:  Highwood River | Class III/IV.  Medium volume skills run.  Here we get the team dialed in on the non verbal communications, running safety component that is so crucial to creeking.  We also really hammer in on the skills introduced the day before.  Both these days we will be going over and building on a boofing progression.  This will be a continued theme throughout the week
Day 3:  Etherington Creek | Class II/IV creek with one 15 – 20 ft drop.  a facilitated day on this highly technical, windy super low volume run.  We will get your crew out leading, we will draw learning from potential communication breakdowns, line choices etc.  We will also have the opportunity to run Mindbender a 15 – 20 ft technical drop
quinn2Day 4:  Cataract Creek | Class IV/IV+.  A spectacular long day on the water.  Where everyones technical and communciation skills will be challenged.  This is where we really start wanting to see the group working as a team efficiently/effectively. Much of the learning comes from debriefing line selection and how the rapids were set up from a safety standpoint.  As long as we are on the water early however we have loads of time to do plenty of skill development on the way.
Day 5:  Skill day and wrap up on the Kananaskis.  This day we continue dialing in the boof progression and focus on any specific skills that people want to really dial in.
So, if water levels are solid then we could run this as is and you guys will learn a tonne, if levels arent cooperating we have literally dozens of other options within a 3 hour drive.  We can also make it longer if you were all keen.  Add a BC component for a few days where we could run a number of ultra clasic continuous Class III+/IV+ creeks.
